Note from KA: Huge thanks to Sarah for sharing these awesome DIY magnetic chalkboards today! Hi everyone! I’m glad to be back to share another DIY post with you this month! My kids are back to school, and every fall I seem to go through an overwhelming urge to get myself organized. I really needed some magnet boards and chalk boards to fill a narrow wall near my family command center in my kitchen, but just couldn’t find anything I liked. Being the savvy DIY’er that I am, I decided to make my own….but with a twist.
These are rustic and raw, perfect for fall! And best of all, they function as BOTH a Magnet Board and a Chalk Board.
Now I have a stylish and unique way to jot down family notes, inspirational quotes, and display some of our latest Instagram pictures! Ready to make your own?! Here’s how:
- Rustic Wood ovals (I found these at my local craft store)
- Magnetic Paint
- Chalk Board Paint
- Paint brushes or foam brushes
To begin, if needed, sand the surface of your wood to create a smooth finish. Then, paint 2-3 coats of the magnetic paint onto your oval. Since the look of the board is rough and rustic, I really wasnt concerned about creating the perfect oval. Just free-hand it! After the paint is thoroughly dry (make sure to follow directions on your paint for appropriate dry times) apply about 2 coats of the chalk paint directly over the magnetic paint. Let dry.
After the chalk board paint has dried, you need to prep the surface by rubbing chalk over the entire surface, then wiping it off with a dry cloth.
Now you are ready to write on your boards! Here’s a great tip for you if you want to write like the chalk artists do: sharpen your chalk with a pencil sharper from the dollar store to get a nice, fine point. This makes it much easier to control and add detail!
You can hang these boards with your hardware of choice, but I found command strips worked best.
Are you ready to get organized?!
