This is the first year I have ever decorated my dining room table for the holidays. This is not because I am lacking in Christmas cheer but because typically my dining room table is the catch-all for all of the stuff in my house that I have no idea what to do with. And also all of my husband's tennis gear. We rarely eat at the table, that's what I am saying.
But this year I had motivation to clear all of that off, partly in the form of a two year old who can now grab stuff off of the table so I have to be careful of what I put on there and partly because I was asked to participate in a holiday decorating challenge by Dollar General. They sent me a gift card and said, "Hey, go visit us and check out our Dollar General Holiday décor and then decorate your dining table with it!"
And I was all "SWEET! Because there is a Dollar General right down the road from me and I love saving money AND I love decorating for Christmas. There were a lot of ANDS in that sentence.
I really was hoping to grab a wreath. My plan was to fill one of my large apothecary jars with ornaments and use the wreath around the base in the center of the table. Except that when I arrived there were already a LOT of people browsing the holiday decor aisles and the wreaths were basically all gone! Apparently they were a popular item.
So I ended up with what you see below. Everything is from Dollar General's Holiday décor section except for the whiteboard, which I already owned. I love the table runner- it's so hard to find one to fit my table. I bought a holiday one last year but it was too big so I returned it. I was pleasantly surprised to find this one for half the cost of the one I bought at a chain store last year! I also picked up the basket- you can never have too many baskets. I'll fill that one with homemade cookies once it's a little closer to Christmas. Right now it holds a couple of bags of peppermint Hershey kisses that I also bought while I was there.
I picked up both tins because I make a lot of sweets during the holiday season so those are filled with fudge. And then I grabbed a bunch of ornaments. I strung them up with some baker's twine that I already had and draped them over my white board and hung them from the chandelier. That's probably my favorite thing, it looks so festive at night when all the lights are twinkling off of the shiny, glittered balls.
