My husband and I are kind of big Adam Sandler fans and two of our favorite movies are 50 First Dates and The Wedding Singer. So we’ll be seeing the new movie Blended because hello! Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore! It’s basically destined to have a spot in our dvd drawer. Plus, it’s a movie about family vacation hi-jinks and family vacations are universally funny.
I mean, everyone has a good vacation story. Like, “Remember that time we went to the lake and Aunt Myrtle fell into the jello? That was so funny!” Except probably not to Aunt Myrtle. Even though I just made her up and all. In my family, however, when we start talking about vacation stories someone always looks at my sister and says “Remember that time the worm nest exploded on your head?”
And my sister inevitably rolls her eyes at us because, well, would YOU ever forget it if a nest of worms exploded onto your head? No. You would not. In fact, you’d probably be traumatized by the memory and never go near a magnolia tree again. Which is a slight problem if you live in the south and also if your older sister decides to have a Steel Magnolias themed rehearsal dinner the night before her wedding.
(Any excuse to have an armadillo cake, am I right? I am right.)
(I didn’t actually have an armadillo cake. I have no idea why my husband vetoed that.)
Anyhow, what happened was we decided to play Hide & Seek after dark. By “we” I mean all of my cousins. Our parents sat out on the patio to supervise and we would all hide while the seeker attempted to find us by flashlight. It was a pretty amazing game. In our version, once you were found you joined the seeker in attempting to locate the rest of the players.
During what would be our last round of the night each of us were found in turn fairly quickly and then we spent the next twenty-odd minutes looking for my little sister. Only five at the time she was normally a terrible hider, unable to keep her giggles from giving her away.
This time we looked for her in vain until a horrible, high pitched shriek filled the air.
She had crawled under the magnolia tree and none of us thought to look there because its branches went all the way to the ground. And because it was full of silkworm nests.
As she quietly moved around inside the tree her head hit a nest and it burst open into her hair. YALL. She came tearing out of the tree while screaming incoherently and when we turned our flashlights on her we all just stared in horror. My quick-thinking grandfather quickly grabbed the garden hose and turned it on her, which led to even more screaming. Over time it has become one of those vacation stories that has almost become like family folklore.
And that, y’all, is my favorite vacation story (although admittedly probably not my sisters!)
The movie Blended releases on May 23 – watch the trailer below and share YOUR favorite funny family vacation story! You can also see more sneak peeks on Facebook, Twitter, and Tumblr!
