After having to push it back because Scarlette was sick, we had her skin testing done this week and as it turns out, she tested negative for everything! The allergist told us that he thinks Scarlette is the sort of kid who gets severe hives within a few days after or prior to having a very high fever. And that it looked like an allergic reaction to her pediatrician because of her breathing/blood pressure being on the cusp but was really an indicator of how sick she was going to get a few days later. Does this happen to anyone else?
This was all great news for us because in addition to not being allergic to the foods she ate that day, she also was negative for the ongoing environmental factors. Our pediatrician had thought that her breathing and dark circles under her eyes might be due to some sort of environmental allergy like grass or our dog but turns out, she just has dark circles under her eyes. And the breathing stuff is just due to preemie lungs, which we already knew.
We’re all extra happy that she is not allergic to Lucy Dog because those two are thick as thieves, I tell you. They love each other so much and you will rarely find Scarlette without Lucy Dog lying next to her. She just follows her from room to room and if Scarlette gets a time-out, Lucy Dog will sit next to her and whimper the entire time Scarlette is crying. And then Scarlette will shake her head sadly and say “Oh Wucy, I so sad dat my Mommy put me in dis timeout because I just want to pway wite now and I don’t want to be in dis timeout and I don’t know why my Mommy put me in dis timeout” while Lucy Dog looks at her with sad puppy dog eyes. IT’S REALLY HARD TO KEEP MY RESOLVE IN THIS HOUSE Y’ALL.
So basically what we have learned so far is that Scarlette just tends to have really extreme reactions to illness. Like how this past fall she started limping and by day two she could hardly walk so we rushed her to the doctor only to find out that she had a cold. Just a regular, run-of-the-mill cold. Did you know that kids who have weaker immune systems can sometimes have colds go to their knee and hip joints and make them inflamed, leaving them unable to walk? Yeah, me neither. I DO NOW.
Or how she has now had some version of HFM half a dozen times and every single time it has presented with completely different symptoms? The consensus is that my child is basically just a little mystery. She keeps me on my toes in every sense of the word, this one.
Oh and the skin test? Let me just tell you how that went. The doctor put the first rack on her back and Scarlette yelped and then said indignantly “HEY! YOU HURTING ME WIF DAT! DON’T DO DAT FING TO ME!”
Then she buried her head in my chest for the next three and when the doctor finished she turned around, narrowed her teary eyes at him, stuck out her hand and then PROCEEDED TO PRETEND TO FREEZE HIM.
I know this because she snarled up her nose and said “I FWEEZING YOU” while holding her hand in his direction and making a hissing noise through her teeth.
What would I ever do without this kid in my life?
