I had planned to have Scarlette’s birthday party this past weekend at a local pumpkin patch. It’s normally still perfect weather for an outdoor party in October in Georgia and in fact, the whole week leading up to the party was great temperature wise. And then out of nowhere we had some sort of crazy cold-front sweep in and it was 45 degrees with 20+ mile per hour winds on Saturday. The people at the pumpkin patch were all “Yeah, we don’t think you should have the party here.” The problem with that was that I did not actually have anything for a birthday party on account of how the pumpkin patch was going to handle all of that for me.
And so I put together an entire birthday at my house for 15 children with less than 24 hours notice.
I KNOW.
As it turns out, if you need to throw a very last minute party and the theme of said party was already “Fall and Pumpkins” then the day after Halloween is a great day for that to happen because all of the pumpkin stuff is like, half off. So basically I went to Target and bought a bunch of pumpkin shaped cookie decorating kits on sale and was all “HEY KIDS! WE’RE GOING TO DECORATE PUMPKIN COOKIES! AND ALSO I AM GOING TO PAINT YOUR FACES BECAUSE THIS FACE PAINTING KIT WAS PRACTICALLY FREE TODAY AND I HAVE NO OTHER PARTY SUPPLIES!”
I had also planned to make these OREO Cookie Balls because my friend had brought them to our MOPS meeting and they were amazing.
I decided to make Peanut Butter OREO Cookie Balls because I prefer my OREOs slathered with peanut butter before I dunk them in milk on account of how I once read a book about a girl who ate OREOs with peanut butter on them for breakfast. I can’t remember the name of the book, but the girl’s name was Courtney and she was very cool and so naturally I thought that perhaps I should eat peanut butter covered OREOs for breakfast because I also wanted to be cool and everyone knows that the best way to learn how to be cool is to emulate fictional characters from middle-grade novels.
So I just used the official OREO Cookie Ball recipe (posted at the end of this post) and I threw in a half a cup of peanut butter. Super easy.
Anyhow, these are really great because not only are they super delicious, they are really easy to make with your kids. Scarlette is very into baking and helping me in the kitchen so I love getting the opportunity to collaborate with brands on posts like these, because they give me fun, new ideas of things to do with her.
I let her count out all of the OREOs and then crush them up with the rolling pin. It was basically the cutest.
Then she said “Actually I think it would be better if I hit like a sword” and started wailing on the bag with said rolling pin. And then as we shaped them into balls she matter-of-factly told me what she thought they resembled, which was not a word I use on the internets. Also, I got tired of rolling them so I just used my little melon ball scooper to shape them instead.
I wanted to make them look like little pumpkins so I sent my husband to buy me some OREOs and those little orange chocolate dipping melts. (And then he texted me pictures of all the OREO choices there were at Walmart.) Anyhow, the OREOS kept kind of crumbling into the coating. So then I just dipped them in the heavier bakers chocolate and that worked great. So then I thought to myself “Self now that they are smooth, I will proceed to dip them in the orange coating!” Except that just melted my previous chocolate coating and so I ended up with this. Don’t try that at home, that’s what I am saying. And that’s why I don’t have pinterest-ty pumpkin cookie balls.
I let Scarlette decorate some however she wanted while I used the leftover orange candy melts and piped on patterns and leaves and then sprinkled them with, well, sprinkles.
And then all the kids decorated their own and their cookies. It was kind of a hit.
I’ll post more pictures of her party later this week! It was so much fun, even if it was thrown together at the last possible minute. But you know, that’s the way the cookie crumbles. (Seriously, I crack myself up.)
