So we all know that birth didn’t exactly go as expected for me. But pregnancy, I loved that. I mean, I did not love how well acquainted I became with my bathroom floor on account of how I basically camped out there for 20 weeks because of hyperemesis gravidarum. But I loved being pregnant, maybe because I had waited to long for it.
I watched a lot of documentaries about pregnancy while I was pregnant, mostly because bedrest means that you watch a lot of television. I also watched the entire series of Gilmore Girls from start to finish. (TEAM LOGAN)
(Don’t even try to make me be Team Dean. I can not and will not do it.)
(Okay, maybe if he built me a car. Maybe.)
This post is brought to you by the 40 Weeks movie and The Motherhood. All opinions and words are my own. I am totally not pregnant. There will be no more buns in this oven.
Recently I got to preview the new movie 40 Weeks, which is a documentary that follows 10 very different families on their journey from early pregnancy to giving birth. I enjoyed that there was a very diverse mix of stories and types of births.
What struck me the most (spoiler alert) was the mom who’s cancer returned during her pregnancy. She said that it made her feel as though she had failed and it broke my heart because that is such a collective thought in motherhood, driven I think by the overwhelming desire to protect your child. I remember feeling like I had failed my daughter when I went into labor so early and in both cases it was something that our body did independently of us. But that feeling is incredibly pervasive, even when you know it isn’t true.
It is definitely a film worth watching if you are a thinking about getting pregnant or early in your pregnancy. It answers a ton of questions, both from the perspective of the pregnant women and from medical professionals. If you’ve already had a baby there might not be a lot of new information for you but it is pretty interesting mostly because birth in general is fairly fascinating. I mean, women grow babies. That will never not be pretty cool to me.
