Every year a local radio station plays a beautiful tribute song interspersed with clips of the newscasts that were broadcasts on September 11, 2001. I thought that this year I might post it here, on this blog. Because I think it's important to have a day of remembrance for the lives lost, for the heroic efforts of the public officers, for the families who were even deeper touched than my own.
But I couldn't. Because the video? It showed the planes hitting the tower. It showed the terrified confusion of the city. And it showed the desperation of the people that jumped.
And I was overcome.
Then it showed the towers fall. It showed the city covered in ash. It showed families clutching photos, searching for their missing loved ones.
And I was still overcome.
And so I could not bring myself to post it here, because it is raw and it is real and it is that day. It is a horrifying history forever preserved on film. It is a beautiful, haunting remembrance.
