Jeff and I have transitioned to the point where we eat about 80% organic now. I say 80% but we all know that I don't know how to do math. But currently we eat completely local or organic with the exception of a few snacks. I cannot resist Keebler cookies, don't ask me to.
We're in the process of purchasing our first home and one of the first things that we would like to do once we are settled is plant a small organic vegetable garden.
I have no idea how to do this.
I remember planting some squash and tomatos when we were younger. But I am pretty sure that didn't work out and my mother just bought some good looking vegetables from the store, snuck them into our garden, and was all "look how great y'all did!" I am pretty sure about this because a few days later I found the remnants of some very tiny squash that had been tossed into the woods behind our house.
Jeff tells me last night that he feels confident about it because he had a garden when he was younger. I tell him that every kid has had a garden and then let him in on how parents secretly buy vegetables from the store to make you feel like your garden was a success. He looks at me curiously and says no, they really had a garden, larger than the room we are in and they grew corn. And a whole other ridiculously long list of vegetables.
This is yet another illustration of how my husband has led a charmed life.
Anyhow, so now I feel pretty confident about the garden but the one thing we have no clue about is how to make it organically stable so that we don't have to use pesticides. I've been reading up on it only to find a lot of very confusing information for a beginner.
So if you have any tips, tricks, or awesome website links that would help us out, please share them! We really would love the help! And then I'll keep trying to learn to cook the stuff because buying a house? That means you can't have dinners delivered anymore.
