It’s been a bit of a long week over here and when Scarlette woke up she climbed in my lap, put her little hands on my cheeks and said very seriously “Mommy? Why does your face look like that?”
I didn’t sleep too well the past couple of nights thanks to neighbors who think the recent legality of fireworks in Georgia means that they should shoot them off all night long while blaring old school Will Smith at alarming volumes.
I mean, I also like to Get Jiggy With It because it reminds me nostalgically of that time my high school class did a choreographed dance to it during our yearly Class Games but I like to do that at appropriate times during the day, like say, 3pm. Not 3am. Do you know what I like to do at 3am? Sleep. I like to sleep.
In any case, apparently having my sleep so disturbed has made my face look “Smooshy, kinda like Bob.”
Bob the Tomato, in case you were wondering.
Always a good motivation for waking up in the morning.
Then she said “Mommy. I weally need to tell you somefing. I forgive you.”
And I was all “Oh thank you, Scarlette. Um…what for, exactly?”
And she said “For being my Mommy!”
“Oh,” I replied, “Well, okay. Thank you. Maybe you could tell me what you think forgiveness means though, just real quick.”
“MOMMY,” she said, “Forgiveness is when you are LOVING somebody, dat is what God says it means so I just telling you I forgive you SO MUCH!”
I feel like somehow this slight mixup is still totally doctrinally sound.
And also super cute.
Except the part about how she keeps flinging her arms around me in public, like at the grocery store, and loudly declaring “I FORGIVE YOU, MOMMY!” which isn’t at all awkward and definitely doesn’t generate some questioning looks being thrown in my direction.
Although to be fair, they could just be thinking to themselves “Selves, that woman needs a good night’s sleep. She looks all smooshy, like Bob the Tomato.”
(P.S. I wrote an article called 6 Things You Should Never Say To A Preemie Mom over at For Every Mom and I may or may not have filled it with BonQuiQui GIFs. I regret nothing.)
(P.P.S. My new book is still on sale for $8ish dollars! Yay! Snag a copy while it’s on mega sale and pair it with this free Gracelaced print for a sweet gift idea!)
