I am a huge fan of the late Kevyn Aucoin. I have all of his make-up books lovingly lined up in my bathroom. Everything you ever wanted to know about applying make-up can be found in them.
I’m playing around with a look for my husband’s holiday party at work. This will be the first time I’ve had a reason to dress up in over a year so I’m a little bit excited about it. I thought about going blonde but then decided that was way too high maintenance for my lifestyle right now. And by “high maintenance” I mean much too expensive due to the crazy amount of hair I have. I typically prefer a bold red lip for more formal occassions when I am brunette but after perusing Pinterest I decided to pair that with a really high gloss look.
The problem with glossy lips is that the gloss tends to smear whatever color lipstick you are wearing all over your face. That is not a good look for me. Or anyone. Unless you’re Angelina Jolie. She could probably pull that off. So feel free to skip this post Angie.
Here is my little tip a la Kevyn Aucoin on how to make your lipstick stay on forever. Not forever as in eternerally but forever like, at least for the duration of your office party.
Step One: Apply lipstick. I use lipstain + lipstick or you could use lipliner + lipstick or just lipstick. Whatever you prefer. But lining your lips will look fancier. There is no photo of me lining my lips because I looked incredibly awkward in all of them. Trust me on this.
Step Two: Tear a piece of tissue paper apart so that it is one ply instead of two. I’m trying to convey this to you in the above photo. Apparently I’m very serious about pulling apart the tissue. Or if you are like me and have no tissue paper in your house, do the same to a piece of toilet paper. It will totally work. Also if you use one ply toilet paper then you are a step ahead of all of us.
Step Three: Dip a brush lightly in some loose powder. Pressed powder will work but loose powder is better.
Here’s where it gets a little awkward. Place the tissue paper over your lips like you’re going to blot them only don’t do the blotting thing. Instead, brush the powder onto your lips through the tissue.
Right. I swear this works. I look like a fembot in that photo. Also, I’m not naked.
Anyhow, do that lightly. Don’t load up your lips with powder, that will look weird and powdery. If you do it lightly you won’t even see the powder when you take the tissue away. But somehow it magically sets your lipstick and it won’t run all over your face throughout the night. It’s a makeup miracle.
Now use a lipstick brush to apply a clear gloss. I like L’Oreal’s Colour Riche leGloss in Naturally Nude – clear gloss is the best because it will go over any lipcolor, even if you aren’t using red like me and my BFF Taylor Swift.
It’s an extra step but it’s quick and easy and will let you wear lipgloss over red lipstick without needing to reapply all night. Now I have to decide what in the world I am going to wear. All I know is, it’s freezing here. Thank goodness Kate Middleton brought pantyhose back, that’s what I’m saying.
(P.S. I waved my hair using the no-heat curls method with the headband)
