I've mentioned that Jeff and I put in a vegetable garden this year. We've been talking about doing it since we moved in but after I read Seven by Jen Hatmaker I was completely motivated to stop talking about it and do it. It's just a small little square foot garden but we're pretty excited about it. We've been trying to buy local, organic produce for a long time now but especially once I started making Scarlette's purees. Seriously, that kid eats better than we do. So putting in our own organic garden made sense because it would save us money in the long run. Plus, we're always running out of romaine lettuce for Jeff's salads and turns out you can just grow your own instead having to run to the store for more. Who knew?
Oh. Right.
Anyhow, I was happy to try to the Whitney Farms® Vegetable and Tomato Food versus a conventional plant food in our garden because it is organic and all natural. That is right up my alley. We'd already done our research to prep the garden with organic soil and put in organic plants and seeds. So now I feel officially crunchy. Kind of like my sugar snap peas.
Jeff snapped this picture of me working in the garden because I was like "JEFF! Take a picture of me working in the garden for my project life album!" Otherwise everyone in my family will just assume he's doing all the work. I mean, he did do the hard work, like digging out the garden and stuff. And nailing the boards together. And using the shovel. But whatever. Look at my cute gardening gloves that I got for a dollar!
I'm really pleased with the fact that I don't have to be worried at all about any chemicals or other non-natural substances mixing in with our food supply. And one bag goes a long, long, long way in a small garden like ours. Also, it tells you how much plant food to use for each plant on the bag. I did not tell this to Jeff though. I pretended I just knew a lot of information about gardening while he laboriously looked it up on his cell phone. That's what he gets for making fun of my gloves.
Plus, I also got to try the organic plant food from Whitney Farms® for our rose and gardenia bushes out front. It's also nice not to worry about spraying chemicals all over the flower garden because for one thing, I could never figure out how to work the sprayer on the old plant food I was using and kept dying myself blue. And for another, I used to have to chase Lucy Dog out of the garden bed for fear that she would ingest said blue chemicals. So the peace of mind and the fact that I don't look like a character from the movie Avatar after working in the garden is a selling point for this girl.
