This compilation involves a lot of personal preference, which is why I left off some things that I’ll mention near the end of the post. And some things will take some trial and error to discover what you and baby like best. But everything listed here are things that we use and love!
1.) Circo Hooded Bath Towels – Really, any hooded bath towels. I like these because they are cute, soft and affordable and actually seem to hold up really well. We got all of ours as hand-me-downs from my sister and they’ve stayed in great shape.
2.) Skip Hop Whale Faucet Cover – I love this guy because his “fins” are are adjustable so that you can get the fit snug over the faucet. And then not worry about your baby crashing into the faucet. I have illogical fears. But luckily, people make cute faucet covers to ease them.
3.) Boon Inc. Bath Shapes – I love these because they fascinate Scarlette AND we’ve never had a problem with them having mildew or other gross bath gunk on them. I chose them because I didn’t want to deal with 26 alphabet letters after every bath 😉
4.) Boon Inc. Ladybug Bath Toy Scoop – I included this on my favorites too. You can read my entire review of it here, but it’s one of my favorites because it holds my bottles of bathwash, doesn’t get the toys mildewy, drains perfectly and has never fallen off the wall in the two years we’ve had it.
5.) Our favorite diapers – When we use disposables I like 7th Generation the best. We cloth diaper and so my entire list of all the diapers we use, diapering gear, and what our routine looks like is here.
6.) Seventh Generation Free & Clear Laundry Detergent – Because Scarlette has super sensitive skin. I do too so this works really well for our laundry without having to buy baby-specific detergent.
7.) Maty’s All Natural Baby Chest Rub – Building your medicine cabinet for baby involves a lot of personal preference but I can not say enough good things about the Maty’s Chest Rub. I knew I didn’t want to use a traditional one that had a lot of chemicals in it. I was skeptical that this wouldn’t work as well but it does, it’s excellent. It is pricey but totally worth having on hand in my opinion.
8.) Fisher-Price Stepstool Potty – Don’t even ask me how potty training is going, y’all. What I can tell you is that Scarlette will not even SIT on the Bjorn potty we had that was a hand-me-down. She would freak the heckfire out when she saw it. I have no idea. My BFF has this one and it plays music when it gets liquid in it! Scarlette likes pouring water in it to make the music play, and she LOVES using it as a stepstool to wash her hands. She won’t actually USE it but she’ll sit on it and that is awesome. Plus, the potty seat is removable to sit on a regular sized toilet as well. I’m really glad we decided to get this. We have the pink one, which does NOT have a splash guard. This is important because the other potty did have one, even though it was the girl version, and Scarlette has a hard time sitting on it because the splash guard was too wide for her legs to go around.
9.) Nourish Organics Coconut Baby Wash & Lavender/Calendula Oil – I discovered Nourish because they were owned by a friend. I did a full review post on it here if you want to see all the details. They are homemade from all-natural products and work wonderfully. They are spendy but they do last a long time. And the lavender oil is AMAZING for cradle crap. Trust me on this. AMAZING. As in, it’s the only thing we tried that worked.
10.) Little Twig Bodymilk Lotion & Sunscreen – I forgot to include the picture of the sunscreen, whoops. This brand works really well for Scarlette’s sensitive skin and it isn’t greasy or runny like some other natural products that I’ve tried. It must be pretty popular because it’s often sold out when I look for it to include in baby shower gifts. It’s also pricey but it lasts a long time. Also, this is why you should put it on your registry so that even if someone doesn’t buy it for you, you can use your registry discount on it. I’m full of tricks, y’all. Family friendly tricks.
Honorable Mentions: The First Aid Kit
There are plenty of items you should register for that fall into the “safety” category such as first aid kits and childproofing items. Most of these are a personal preference but I thought I’d list what has worked for us and our needs. One thing that I learned is that a pre-made first aid kit is not my jam. I don’t actually say that in real life. I just said it there because I always read that over at Young House Love and wanted to try it out. I don’t think it’s working for me.
I bought two different first aid kits because I didn’t love the first one and I didn’t love everything in the second either. I ended up piecing my kit together with individual items and I recommend registering that way too because it gives people a lot of options for inexpensive items. And I just use a regular comb to brush her hair, I feel like the pre-packaged kits have a lot of filler items, like seven baby combs and fifty two emery boards. I got my own nail file, baby kit makers.
Here is what is in mine:
- Nosefrida Syringe – It seems weird. Okay, it IS weird. But it was easier for me to use than a classic bulb syringe and it doesn’t run the risk of getting mold that you can’t see inside of it. Google that. Or don’t, it’s really gross.
- Fingernail scissors – Despite their name, safety CLIPPERS will not prevent you from cutting off the tip of your child’s thumb. True story, morning glory. Trimming with fingernail scissors is way easier. Another true story? I bit Scarlette’s nails off until she was like, two.
- Children’s Benedryl, Infant Tylenol & Hydrocortizone cream – I keep these in her diaper bag all the time just in case. I also keep an updated list of her dosage for each since she is under the weight/age limit printed on the bottles, as well as a short version of her medical history and emergency contact information. I’m totally neurotic.
- Bandages, alcohol wipes, antibacterial wipes, etc. – Just little things that I can get free with coupons at the drugstore
- Thermometer– I’m in the market for a new thermometer so I’d love some recommendations! What do you have that you love? Our NICU sent some home with us and we just used those but now they are dying.
