Growing up my grandfather kept a candy dish next to his brown leather recliner. I can’t remember a time that it wasn’t fully stocked with Werther’s candies. We played a little game with him, one where we snuck up by his side and darted out a hand to grab a candy before he caught us. He always caught us. And he always gave us the candy, even if it was almost dinnertime. “It’ll be our little secret” he’d mock whisper.
To this day two things never fail to remind me of my grandfather, the smell of Lagerfield cologne and the gold foil wrapper of a Werther’s candy.
I agreed to write this blog post with Werther’s because we rarely treat ourselves to candy these days and their email about their new Werther’s Original Sugar Free Candy looked intriguing. One of my family members was recently diagnosed with diabetes and I thought I could take a sampling over to her as a sweet treat.
But when the box came and I opened it up to find a little candy dish filled with tiny Werther’s candies in gold foil wrappers, a wave of nostalgia swept over me. It completely took me back and it’s probably the first time I’ve gotten teary eyed over a blogger promo box.
Also, let me take a minute to say that I am so impressed with the samples that they sent me. I knew I would like them because I’ve loved Werther’s ever since I was a little kid but the presentation of the box they sent was awesome. And they included a ton of coupons, which is great because A) I love coupons and B) We’re already out of the caramel apple flavor.
Which brings me to my next point which is ZOMG CARAMEL APPLE. They sent over four new flavors of the Werther’s Original Sugar Free Candy and the caramel apple was hands down everyone’s favorite. They taste JUST LIKE a caramel apple. I threw a bunch in my purse to take to breakfast with my family and it won the vote with them too. The coffee is a close second for me, I really like it. I liked the cinnamon but I actually preferred to stir those into my morning coffee rather than eating them. (It’s a great idea, you should totally try it.) And the original flavor surprised me because even though it is sugar free, it tasted exactly like the Werther’s I remember from my childhood.
You can visit Werther’s Facebook Page to play a game and get a coupon to try them for yourself. (I highly recommend the caramel apple.)
So thanks, Werther’s, for the candy and for the sweet memories.
