One of the ways we save money around here is by not having cable. We’re big movie people, J and I, and so we typically spend our nights watching a movie versus watching television. Unless, that is, The Voice is on that night on account of my deep appreciation for the excellent craftmanship God did on Adam Levine. I appreciate quality handiwork like that, y’all.

But seriously America, if you don’t stop picking tween music artists over amazing vocalists like Sara Simmons I’m going to lose my ever-lovin’ mind. *End Soapbox*
We typically stick to a handful of selected shows for Scarlette since we’re THOSE parents about screen time. I think I’ve mentioned how much I love Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood for it’s Mister Rogers nostalgia and wonderful teaching moments so I was really excited to see that they added the series to Netflix this month. I’m not even supposed to be writing about that for this post but seriously, if you have toddlers I highly recommend Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood. I am not even kidding that when I got the email letting me know it was available, I ran in the bathroom where J was attempting to shower peacefully and I yelled “DANIEL TIGER IS ON NETFLIX!”
Please see the moment of peace this gives me:
(Funny things about this picture: date night wine glass replaced with monkey sippy cup, yet Lucy Dog looks exactly the same. Obviously that is her spot on the couch. And yes that IS Thin Mint Puppy Chow in that first picture, which we ate in lieu of popcorn while watching The Queen of Versailles this week.)
I have hardly told you anything they want me to tell you about the new Netflix Family yet, y’all. I have GOT to work on things like “Being Concise” and “Staying On Topic.”
So what I’m saying is, our family movie nights are more like stay-in-date-nights after Scarlette goes to bed because she can’t make it through an entire movie yet. So I typically use the family section on the days during the week that we keep my five year old niece Nixie. We have her often in the summertime and use a movie as her “quiet time” during the day while Scarlette naps. The content is already curated to be family friendly so if I head to that section, she can browse with me without seeing titles on the screen about horror flicks with images of scary people holding chainsaws or bloody severed arms.
I appreciate not having to explain things like that.
It looks like this, except it doesn’t have my awesome squiggly arrows on it.
I still can’t let her have free reign. I mean, Jumanji gave me nightmares for months. Last year. So a little guidance is always good but the Family Movie Night category is a pretty safe bet. And my favorite things to watch with the kids are the documentaries in the TV For Curious Kids section. Planet Ocean is amazing and if your child has any interest in a specific animal or dinosaurs, you can find some really great education resources here. Scarlette loves monkeys so occasionally we’ll watch part of a wildlife film so we can see monkeys and talk about them in addition doing some crafts about other jungle animals . Plus, those are just more interesting to me as an adult. Too many kids shows make me feel a little crazycakes, I’m not gonna lie.
Netflix is great because we used to spend a lot of money going to the store and renting movies when we were dating and first married. That’s right kids: there used to be big stores where you walked in and rented a movie! You couldn’t just get movies out of a machine or stream them on the internet. I am old.
Now we spend $7.99 a month on Netflix and have our shows for Scarlette’s morning screen time, plenty of movies for us to choose from during the weeknights and I always have something new for my niece to watch when she is over. Plus, no commercials. Holla!
So have YOU seen any good movies lately? What should we add to our queue? J likes really obscure movies that I’ve never heard of. I like comedies. This isn’t family friendly at all- in fact, it has really strong language but J and I watched End Of Watch the other night and thought it was fantastic. Oh, and I finally saw Pitch Perfect, which also isn’t family friendly but IS completely hilarious.
