Remember how I’ve been in the process of making over my kitchen with Glidden® paint? Yeah, I’m still painting cabinets. Do you know what I’ve learned throughout this process? I HATE PAINTING CABINETS, Y’ALL. But seriously, it’s worth the effort because my kitchen looks so much brighter and cheerier now.
I decided to remove a cabinet, meaning one less cabinet I had to paint. Holla! The cabinet on the top left was next to the doorway to the kitchen and I felt as though the placement was awkward. It stuck out so far that you rounded the corner into the kitchen and were like “OH HAI CABINET IN MY FACE!” So I took it down. And when I say “I” I actually totally mean me because I was stubborn and wanted to do it myself. So my husband took pictures of me while I attempted to unscrew a cabinet from the wall.
(This probably would have been a totally successful undertaking if I had thought to completely empty out the cabinet first. After it crashed onto the counter I discovered a cake stand inside, along with a few other (broken) things. Note to self: stop being so ridiculous.)
I replaced it with the Stenstorp shelf from Ikea because it was a sleeker profile on the wall and also because I made the decision to start using cloth napkins in lieu of paper towels and loved that I could hang some from the hooks on it. I snagged these eight cloth napikns on sale at Pier 1 (plus I shopped online through ebates to get cash back and then picked them up for free in store to avoid shipping charges. Yay!) But the biggest transformation so far is the new paint + beadboard wallpaper. I’ll have another post detailing how we did that but check out the before and afters:

The shelves house fresh fruit as well as cookbooks, some honey straws and fresh flowers from the farmer’s market. Those dahlia’s are Scarlette’s second favorite part of the farmer’s market, right after getting to pet the chicken of the lady we buy our eggs from. Every week she asks “We go to fahmuh mahket? I get da pink fwower?” I’m kind of a sucker for letting her pick them out, she’s going to be a sad girl when the seasons change.
We ended up going with Glidden paint in Sea Spray for the walls (which I love and am having a hard time getting a good picture of because of the position of our windows) and their high-gloss white paint for the trim. Everything looks so crisp and cheerful now, which is just what I wanted for the kitchen.
Most inspiration pictures that I found for blue and white kitchens had a very coastal look, which I loved, but decided that since most of our home is pretty neutral the kitchen would be a great place to bring in a lot of color. Plus, I had the antique red hoosier kitchen in there (you can peek inside it here!) so I really wanted to tie in the red. Giving the hoosier kitchen a fresh coat of bright red paint is still on my to do list.
I ordered two of my favorite prints from The Wheatfield and then popped them into some white IKEA frames. I also made a faux roman shade using a tablecloth. That tablecloth was the first gift we received when we were engaged and so it is pretty sentimental to us. We no longer have a table to fit it so I decided to make it into a curtain and it’s basically the color scheme that I planned the entire kitchen around. There is still a lot to do (coughcoughcabinetscoughcough) but it’s coming together, slowly but surely.
I eventually want to do something else on top of the hoosier kitchen – it’s just housing some plants right now. Any ideas?

Basically I’m pseudo-cursing the popcorn ceiling. WHO EVEN PUTS POPCORN CEILINGS IN HOUSES ANYMORE? I dislike that person.
After the cabinets are finished I’ll show you the other side of the room, with it’s new lighting and beadboard backsplash and shiny white cabinets with new trim – I can’t wait for it to all come together.
