I wanted to make the transition to preschool a little easier by for Scarlette since we had a much less structured summer (that’s code for “Spent A Lot Of Time In A Swimming Pool”) and so I searched around on Pinterest for some morning routine charts for kids.
And while I loved a lot of them, I had trouble finding one that matched our morning routine or that I could customize to fit our needs. But then I remembered that I own photoshop and that I could just make my own if I drank enough coffee to stay awake past 9pm one evening. So that’s what I did. You can see that she’s only just a little bit excited about it.
Scarlette loves to look at herself. She’s constantly asking to see pictures of herself or watch videos that I’ve taken of her. Probably this means she’s going to grow up to be a blogger. I crack myself up. Anyhow, because of this and also the fact that she is just two and a half years old, I thought that using photos of her actually doing the tasks that I wanted her to accomplish would be really helpful for her.
First I created a personalized morning routine chart for her in Photoshop and printed it out. I used some self laminating sheets to laminate it because I had some leftover from my DIY photo placemat project (but now I own this inexpensive laminator and highly recommend it, I use it all the time and the laminating sheets for it are much cheaper than the self laminating ones.)
Then I punched holes in the top, added some tab reinforcements, looped a ribbon through it and hung it on her bookshelf. I let her use a washable dry erase marker to check off the list as we go, but only with intense supervision. The world (and all my walls) are Scarlette’s canvas, that’s basically what I’m saying.
I chose to make our morning routine tasks as simple as possible because it takes forever for Scarlette to do anything. Partially because she is two and partially because she enjoys singing and dancing her way through life. The most mundane tasks, such as making one’s bed, are turned into a live action musical in our house if Scarlette is involved in them. It’s kind of like I live in the real life version of the movie Enchanted, y’all.
I saved this as a layered photoshop file so that you can include your own personalization: add your child’s name and photos and change the task to whatever suits you. There is a tutorial on how to make your photos fit the circles here and it is very simple to do so don’t even be scared! All of the fonts that I used can be found in this post if you’d like to use the same ones.
If you don’t have Photoshop you can either download a free trial of Elements to use or you can print out this PDF version of the chart. You’ll have to glue on your own pictures and add your child’s name (use stickers, maybe?) on this one though.
