One of the things I enjoyed the most about publishing Anchored was recording the audiobook. My favorite part of the process was that towards the end of the sessions J was able to bring Scarlette up to the studio. We thought it would be fun to try recording her saying a few of her quotes from the book. We figured that if we didn’t get anything useable it would at least be nice to have at home.
Scarlette, however, took to the microphone like a champ and nailed it on her first take. Then she spent the next twenty minutes expertly narrating a made-up story to us, so it was pretty clear that her future lies in podcasting. It is one of my favorite memories from this year and I was thrilled when the audiobook publishers decided to leave her cameo on the audiobook.
You can listen to the sample on Audible and confession: it is a bit awkward for me to hear it, mostly because it’s just always disconcerting to hear your own voice on tape, right? And also because for audiobooks, they smooth everything out a bit and slow it down so I sound sort of posh. I mean, I wish I sounded posh all the time. (Or British.)
In real life, I talk a mile a minute. With my hands. As in, it took a very long time for me to adjust to the small space of the recording booth and stop repeatedly accidentally hitting the microphone with my hands as I narrated.
If you are an audiobook lover, right now you can try Audible free for 30 days and get TWO free Audiobooks!
And I’m just saying, do you know who HAS an audio book that you can listen to on Audible?
That’s right.
This girl.
So if you’d like to listen to it you should totally take advantage of the free Audible trial. Personally, I’ve been using my free trial to listen to Mindy Kaling’s new book since it would be weird to listen to myself and also on account of how I had to get my very first root canal ever in the middle of this pregnancy. And since I’m all high-risk pregnant and stuff it took five (count them: five) appointments to do one root canal, so audiobooks + earbuds saved me from the constant sound of the drill.
The only teeny, tiny problem with that plan was that I kept wanting to laugh in the middle of my root canal. Which seems like the best case scenario for dental work except turns out, it’s not so comfortable to laugh with a drill in your mouth. On the other hand, it did keep my mind off the fact that someone was using a drill inside my face.
I’m just saying, if you’re going to listen to two free books, you should definitely snag mine and Mindy Kalings.
And also try to avoid root canals during pregnancy. I mean, that has nothing to do with audiobooks, that’s just my free life tip for you today. I’m full of useful information like that.
P.S. If audiobooks aren’t your thing, you can read the first chapter free instead!
