I snapped some photos of our garden the other day. Which is going fairly well except for how the bunnies ATE ALL OF MY STRAWBERRIES. The bunnies, they are sweet. But seriously, I will CUT THEM if they eat my strawberries again.
I’m currently enamored with tiny baby peppers. I think they are the cutest little things that I have ever seen, after that baby I had. She’s pretty cute. OKAY, THE CUTEST.
(You are welcome for that flashback.)
The book Animal, Vegetable, Miracle by Barbara Kingsolver came highly recommended to me and y’all. I’d be willing to say that it’s likely to be the best book I’ll read all year. I’ve never actually read any of her other things, it’s just that once upon a time my husband forced me to watch Food Inc. and now I read stuff about growing your own food because, well, if you ever watch that documentary you will understand. I thought this would be a dry read on account of how it is about gardening and such but it is just the opposite. It’s completely captivating.
And not just because I am passionate about the topic, moreso after reading it, but because it really is so well-written. It’s equal parts witty, informative and inspiring. And if you are at all interested in eating clean and supporting local and growing a garden then start here because this will motivate you. I would lay in bed and read passages aloud to Jeff and it didn’t even annoy him because we were both so impressed with the material. Plus, I’m amazing at reading passages aloud to people, probably in part because of how I was in our high school’s drama club and so obviously I’m very good at dramatic interpretations of books about plants.
I make reading about how asparagus grows look Oscar-worthy good, y’all. Just kidding. But at least I’m not wearing a headlamp to bed any more.
(Also, I’m not kidding. I read that passage with enough angst to get me cast in an episode of Pretty Little Liars.)
(I know, just when you think I’m getting all grown up and mature I go and reveal that I watch Pretty Little Liars.)
In truth though, this whole gardening endeavor has been very much miracle for me. Tending this little plot of creation gently reminds me that there is provision and peace.
(Unless you are a bunny rabbit with a fondness for my strawberries.)
