For many of us the holiday season is here . We’ve trimmed our trees or we’re waiting anxiously until next week when our husband says it’s the “appropriate” time for tree trimming. I’m not bitter.
It’s no secret that this is my favorite time of year. I got married three days before Christmas because I adore it so much. I love the joy that infuses people during this season, the twinkling lights adorning the houses on my way home, the overall spirit of Christmas.
It’s in that spirit that I write this post.
Last year we woke up early on Christmas morning and instead of making our way to the tree, we drove down a deserted highway to the hospital. I clutched a tiny stocking in my hands and wished for the only gift I’ve ever truly wanted, for my baby to live. My heart was heavy and nothing was merry or bright as we walked the familiar steps from the parking garage to the NICU.
Once inside I spotted my Scarlette and on her head sat a tiny little Christmas hat. I burst into tears. She wasn’t even two and a half pounds yet, with too many wires and IVs for them to allow her to wear clothes. I had so badly wanted to put her in a Christmas outfit and was disappointed when I was told no. Something about seeing her in that little Christmas hat brought so much joy to my heart.
Her nurse mentioned that there were only three holiday hats in their NICU and she had come in early to snag one for Scarlette. She came to work early on Christmas Day to give us that small gift and it meant the world to me. Thank you, Nurse L.
I’d like to ask for a favor. I know so many of y’all that read here are crafty talented at making little hats (because you sent some for Scarlette!) I would love to supply our NICU with holiday hats for the babies. To supply our unit I would need about 30 hats, ranging in size from micro-preemie to newborn. I’m fairly handy with a crochet hook (thank you for teaching me that skill Mamaw Sybill) but I don’t think I’m going to be able to finish that many before Christmas.
If you are able to make and donate a little hat, I would be so very appreciative. You can leave me a comment if you are interested (include your email in the email space) and I’ll send you over the mailing address.
Thank you so much!
