Thank you to American Eagle Outfitters for sponsoring this post. While this was a sponsored opportunity from American Eagle Outfitters, all content and opinions expressed here are my own. As evidenced by how I meant to post this for What I Wore Wednesday but was real sick and so it became What I Wore Wednesday And Posted On The Weekend.
“Don’t you love New York in the fall? It makes me wanna buy school supplies. I would send you a bouquet of newly sharpened pencils if I knew your name and address.” – You’ve Got Mail
I love everything about back to school shopping mostly because I have a fondness for fall and nostalgia and I loved back to school shopping as a kid. I want to buy all the school supplies and I want them to all be Lisa Frank.
I was like a walking Seventeen Magazine in the 90’s, y’all. American Eagle Outfitters was my store of choice for malling, mostly because I had a penchant for Fair Isle Sweaters and Timberland boots. But I feel like the AE brand is pretty classic as a whole (they are my go-to for great fitting tee shirts) and so when they invited me to go back to school shopping I was like “Totally. I’ve only been out of high school for like, a decade so I will still completely fit in.”
And then I went to the mall and discovered crop tops everywhere like I had been transported back to 1994.
I picked up the cutest sweater ever and then I tried it on and discovered that it ended just below my ribcage and I was all “WHAT IS GOING ON HERE?”
And the girl in the fitting room next to me was like “Um ma’am, do you need any help in there?”
So then I quit talking to myself out loud while she explained that it was not so much a “crop top” as it was a “layering piece” meant to be worn with other longer layered shirts under it. Which I can totally do. And so I was quite pleased to see that I could still shop at one of my favorite stores despite my MOM status. Because like my BFF Taylor Swift says, “We never go out of style.”
I needed to shop for fall staples, like new jeans and scarves, and I really loved the Denim X line of skinny jeans. They’re thicker than jeggings and super slim without being skin tight, which I prefer because I do not like having to do that thing where I put my jeans on by yanking as hard as I can while simultaneously hopping around the bedroom.
(I am unable to take pose-y pictures without laughing awkwardly at myself. J loves being forced to take a million pictures of me in order to get one that hides my Chandler Bing Picture Face.)
I was chatting about my new jeans with a friend over Starbucks this morning because the rules of finding really good fitting jeans are A) share the wealth and B) stock up on them. I ended up buying two pairs in different washes because I liked the fit so much. Plus, the dark wash reminded me of the style of denim that Princess Kate wears so that was a win.
I also grabbed another oversized scarf (this one) because after my trip to Ireland I discovered that I love oversized scarfs and also I needed to be prepared for Pumpkin Spice Latte season. Obviously. I loved the take on classic plaid in coral. I like to think Princess Kate would approve.
I paired it all with an American Eagle Favorite Tee, which I love because I like my tee’s super soft and on the long side.
Sometimes after I drop Scarlette off at preschool I go and read for awhile in front of the local college campus. And when I made J take these pics I was all “J! Do I look like a college student? Because these boot things are supposed to be super trendy.”
Never mind what J had to say about that. My BFF assured me that they are, in fact, on point and so I felt real stylish.
Plus, one time, this lady got out of her car during preschool carline wearing nothing but an oversized sleep shirt. TRUE STORY. And so anytime I feel a little unsure about my fashion choices, I just think to myself “SELF, AT LEAST YOU ARE WEARING PANTS.”
(And now in my new jeans I’ll be like “Self, AT LEAST YOU ARE WEARING REALLY GREAT FITTING PANTS. BOOM!”)
