Last week we met up with some other local bloggers and their kids for a family-friendly event hosted by Netflix. Scarlette was obviously very excited about it.
Meghan was our hostess and she selected Childhood Favorites as our theme to celebrate all of the fun cartoons from our childhood that you can watch on Netflix. All of the food was even themed like our favorite childhood cartoons! There were blue Smurfs cupcakes, Strawberry Shortcake, Rainbow Bright fruit Skewers and Scooby Snacks! My two year old got a little bit excited over Scooby Snacks, if you couldn’t tell.
Most of us have a Netflix subscription so we chatted a bit about our childhood favorites (my contribution to the conversation included this photo of me dressed up as JEM circa 1987. It’s truly outrageous.) I pushed my love of Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood on everyone in the room with toddlers because that little tiger convinced my child to sit on the potty and thus, he is my hero.
At our house we stream Netflix on our WiiU because we don’t have cable but Meghan had it set up on a few different devices, like her iPad.
(We don’t have an iPad and I am thinking that’s a good call on account of how Scarlette attempted to scale the countertops once she saw a certain little monkey on the screen of this one. She was all “I DAT CHURIOUS ZORGE! I NEED DA CHURIOUS ZORGE!”)
While we chatted about growing up in the 80’s and 90’s, the kids went on a scavenger hunt and then colored some coloring sheets featuring The Magic School Bus. I was all MISS FRIZZLE! Because I had sort of forgotten about Miss Frizzle and her amazing weather-themed outfits that just happened to coordinate with whatever crazy field trip they happened to go on that day. Now I am thinking I need to make a note to add some of that series to Scarlette’s book collection for the future.
Then we played “Pin The Cutie Mark On The Pony” which Scarlette loved because she’s done that game a few times before (like at our Minnie Mouse party) and thinks it is the funniest thing ever. I might have been laughing a bit too hard to actually get any pictures of her in focus.
We had a lot of fun and I learned a lot from the other ladies there, like how to use the parental controls on Netflix (filed that bit of information away for the future!)
Oh, and we learned that the cost of Netflix for one year is LESS than the cost of taking a family of five to the movies TWICE. As in, two times. Going to the movies is crazy expensive, y’all. We rarely go unless we have a gift card, we just make our own popcorn (my husband makes some amazing popcorn using coconut oil and it is like five cents instead of five hundred and seventy two dollars) and watch Netflix movies from our couch.
Oh, and I’m totally stealing this idea for my next party:
Thanks for hosting us, Meghan! We had such a good time and it was fun to hang out with some other Atlanta mom bloggers – you can check out their recaps of the event at JaMonkey, Southern Girl Ramblings, and My Brown Baby (and also spy some Scarlette cameos because she is a little bit of a photobomber, that one.)
I thought this theme was such a fun one because I am a sucker for childhood nostalgia- I even have a pinboard devoted to it (which totally features The Magic Schoolbus kids, lol.) What would your favorite childhood cartoon or tv show be?
