Every year I make a set of homemade gifts for friends and family and this year I decided to do bath salts. Mostly because my friend Kristen sent me some and I discovered that apparently, I LOVE using bath salts. So now I feel as though everyone needs them.
I’ve seen several versions of these around the web but they all seemed to use food coloring to tint the salt and I didn’t want to use any dyes. But we use this pink himalayan salt and I thought it would be a nice, natural alternative. It’s a little bit lighter in color but it gives the same striped effect and looks so cute!
Here is how to make it! *some affiliate links
How To Make Your Own All Natural Candy Cane Striped Peppermint Bath Salts
You’ll need a glass jar (I love these small hinged jars and these milk jars but you can also use any mini jelly jars, mason jars, etc. depending on the size you want to make.) You’ll also need epsom salt, pink himalayan salt, peppermint essential oil, and baking soda.
In a glass bowl mix together 1/2 cup of epsom salt, 1/2 tsp of baking soda and 2-3 drops of peppermint essential oil. In a second glass bowl, mix together 1/4 cup of pink himalayan salt, 1/2 tsp baking soda and 2 drops of essential oil.
Then pour the salts into your glass jars alternating the colors as you go. I used a makeshift funnel because I could not find my actual spice funnel anywhere. Probably I should check in my daughter’s play kitchen.
And that is it! It’s so easy. I tied a bow on mine with a little bit of red and white striped baker’s twine.
Your kids can help with this project too – in our house we are very strict about keeping our essential oil bottles off limits to kids but I let Scarlette help me pour the salts after I had mixed them and put the peppermint away.
You can make these with other essential oils too, my mother’s favorite is lavender. I used Young Living Peppermint Essential Oil because that is what our family uses on a day to day basis. I have been using them for just shy of a year now, because I was wanting to make my own bath & body products (you can see the DIY sugar scrub and DIY bath bombs here!) and because I was looking for some all-natural wellness options for our family. I don’t talk too much about them on my blog because I don’t want to seem preachy about our choices but I am so happy with how they have worked for our family. You can read about my thoughts and experiences with them here.
Anyhow, I received my kit with the diffuser + oils last year for Christmas and we use them daily. I accumulated enough credit to get a second kit and thought it would be fun to give it away to one of y’all, because at $150 it’s a great value for everything that is included but also a big investment during the holidays. And it has just been really beneficial to our family so I would love to see it go to someone else who is wanting to try out essential oils!
So to enter to win a Young Living Essential Oils Premium Starter Kit, just click this link HERE to visit my Holiday Gift Guide – you can enter to win all of the prizes I am giving away in one place, including the essential oils kit (plus you can see some more bath/body recipes using the oils)
This is not a picture of the starter kit, this is just my current favorite combination! If you are interested in getting a kit and would like to place an order with me this month, I’m giving away a bottle of Christmas Spirit with each starter kit because it’s my favorite and…Christmas Spirit! (Or it’s equivalent if it runs out because apparently it’s everyone else’s favorite too.)
