Red.
That’s what it says her name means.
I mean, I should probably have anticipated that, seeing as how we decided to name her Scarlette and all. Which is basically a color. One of the six shades of red in the box of Crayolas in the cabinet is called Scarlet.
I’m still somewhat disappointed as I was sort of hoping for something a little more dramatic. Something with flair. Like how “Matthew” means “Gift From God.” I just thought it might be comforting to find words like that in this book of baby names that I’m thumbing through to pass the time as I wait for permission to touch her again.
She stretches one tiny arm up, splaying rice-sized fingers and toes, set aglow from the red light of her pulse ox. The red lights of the alarms flash as they ring out and the red line on the monitor rises and falls and a red button blinks rapidly on her bed.
I’m surrounded by color and I see it.
Red.
She’s gonna set the world on fire.

Today I’m participating in Five Minute Friday, a creative prompt in which you free write for five minutes. I’m slightly geeky because I totally got a kick out of using my kitchen timer, y’all. I’ve been participating in a few different creative writing exercises as I work on a book proposal so don’t be surprised if you start seeing a lot of words here as I flesh things out. You can join in with the group here!
