Y’ALL. This is about to get so cute:
Scarlette told me that she wanted to be Super Why for Halloween this year, thus destroying all of my cute plans for dressing her up in something super sweet, like her cute friend Cora’s Madeline costume.
(Although if we were going with book characters, Scarlette would be Eloise. OBVIOUSLY.)
Scarlette loves Super Why, y’all. Every night she sings “Somewhere Over The Rainbow” with me at bedtime only on the last line she sings “Scarlette fwies ober da wainbow wif her fwiend Shuper Why!”
I told you it was cute.
I didn’t want to buy a Super Why costume mostly because I’m cheap and also because no one makes Super Why costumes in Scarlette’s size. I, however, can not sew a straight line to save my life and so I whipped this up using some random articles of clothing, ribbon and glitter from my craft stash. Dang it feels good to be a
gangsta scrapbooker. I asked my friend Tammy to make Scarlette a Super Why t-shirt and then paired it with some leggings and bloomers.
(And okay, I know Super Why wears a green mask but I did not have any green felt. I also tried to convince her to wear her blue tennis shoes but she insisted that “SHUPER WHY WEAR DA BOOTS!” and so, you know.)
I wish I had taken video of her reaction to seeing herself dressed in it for the first time. Jeff and I agreed that it is one of our top 5 favorite Scarlette moments because she just stood there squealing and giggling and twirling her cape while saying over and over again “WOOK AT ME! I SHUPER WHY! I SHUPER WHY MOMMY! I SHUPER WHY DADDY! I WUV DIS SHUPER WHY COSHTUME SHO MUCH!”
Full disclosure: I may have cried.
We had not planned on dressing up with her but the little stinker sweetly put her hands on my face at bedtime the other night and asked me if I would “dwessh up wike Alpha Pig on Hawwowween Day wif me?”
And because I am such a sweet mommy, I told her that Daddy would do it.
In my defense, Daddy owns a hard hat and a tool belt.
But I told her that I would dress up like Wonder Red and that was ALL SHE COULD TALK ABOUT FOR DAYS.
“My mommy gone be da Wunner Red and my daddy gone be da Alpha Pig and I be da SHUPER WHY ON DA HAWWOWWEEN DAY and den we twick or tweat and get aww da kiyundy!”
So this morning I had the bright idea to get up extra early and get all dressed up as Wonder Red and then wake her up while wearing my costume. I envisioned this being a beautiful, special, bonding moment between mother and daughter. I was making memories over here, folks.
Except what happened is that I snuck in her room, bent over her bed and said “Oh Scarlette! We have a SUPER BIG PROBLEM!”
And she took one look at me through filtered light and fuzzy eyes and started screaming like a banshee.
Then she started crying and saying “NO MOMMY! YOU NOT WEAR MY HAT! TAKE DAT HAT OFF WITE NAO!”
And by the time I got her all calmed down and fed and clothed in her costume for her Halloween party at preschool and then pried her away from admiring herself in the mirror, we were running Super Late and so I had to walk her into school dressed like Wonder Red.
That is how my morning went, y’all.
Happy Halloween 🙂
