I love to read, it’s just my favorite way to indulge, and every month or so I try to keep a running list of my current favorite recommendations for y’all. So here is what I’ve read and loved recently!
Searching For Sunday by Rachel Held Evans – I finished this one and highly recommend it. I normally read a book through in one sitting and but I kept stopping during this one to call my best friend and read passages aloud to her for us to discuss. I think it is one of the best books I have read that gets at the heart of my generations discontent with the construct of the church.
The Accidental Bestseller by Wendy Wax – My local bookstore recommended this fiction book to me and they were totally on the mark. I really enjoyed this one. It wrapped up a little too quickly for me (although not how I thought it would and I love a good twist) but overall I thought it was a good read and one that made me want to read more by that author. It’s definitely a great summer read and a fun, fictional peek at the New York Publishing Industry. If you liked The Devil Wears Prada then you’ll like this one.
Texts From Jane Eyre by by Mallory Ortberg – This is one of my favorite book of the year so far. It is not at ALL light on the language and I wouldn’t exactly call it edifying but if you are a lover of classic literature, satire and parody then you will love this book. I literally kept sending text messages of the text to my two best friends who also love classic literature like I do until they broke down and bought a copy. And then they kept texting me all “THIS BOOK IS HILARIOUS.” And it’s not just about Jane Eyre. The texts from The Baby-Sitter’s Club members and The Sweet Valley Twins had me cracking up.
Amish Promises by Leslie Gould* – Y’all know I love my Amish Fiction. I loved Leslie Gould’s Courting Cate series and so I was excited to read this one. I thought this one was better, with more developed characters and a storyline that I felt invested in. I loved the interwoven stories between the Amish family and their non-Amish neighbors. I will definitely read the rest of the books in this series.
Bread & Wine by Shauna Niequist – I am reading this slowly, almost like a devotional. Normally I am not a fan of books with recipes sprinkled through them, because getting creative in the kitchen is not my thing. Unless it involves cupcakes. I’m totally happy to whip up sweet things but I just don’t care a whit for fancy recipes about chicken. So I didn’t think this book was going to appeal to me but a friend raved about it so I picked it up and y’all, it is so good. I am in love with Shauna’s writing style and think this is such a relatable, enjoyable read.
Anchored by um, me. – What? My book officially releases ONE WEEK from today (although it IS available now.) Of course I had to mention it here. Besides, I’ve read that thing like a billion times now to check for typos and what not and so I totally earned a spot on the list. Plus also? ONE WEEK from today y’all! I sincerely hope that you love it and tuck it in your beach bag alongside your other summer reads!
