So here’s a little follow up on our new bed from yesterday’s post about our master bedroom makeover. The opportunity arose for me to partner with intelliBED® and after learning more about the company I was stoked to work with them. I realize that stoked is probably a very teenager word but I will continue to use it because I love it.
Also, if I were a teenager I would say very hip things like “Dat bed, doe.” Except I’m in my thirties now and so when I say hip things about my new bed, I literally mean as in MY HIPS because mattress support.
(On the plus side, my hips don’t lie.)
In December we started shopping for a new mattress because ours was a hand-me-down that was over twenty years old. I know. Being in your thirties is when you start to look around and be like “Maybe we should invest in some home furnishings of our own.” Anyhow, by December I was spending most nights sleeping in the guest bed on account of how I was waking up with back pain every morning anytime I slept in our bed. And the guest bed is a twin mattress from IKEA that I’ve had since college with a down topper on it. It’s not like THAT is good sleep. Obviously we rarely have overnight houseguests.
I kind of wanted to sleep in my room again. And I really wanted to be able to lounge on my bed with a good book without it hurting my back.
I have never had back pain until this past year, either because I’m toting a preschooler around on my hip half the time or because I was in a car accident about a year ago and have had lingering issues ever since. J, however, has had back problems his whole life because he has scoliosis. His hips also do not lie, and by that I mean they do not lie symmetrically and so he has one leg that is longer than the other. So I do not complain about my whiplash to him.
Anyhow, we went with a combination mattress, which has a spring layer, latex layer, intelli-GEL® layer and a foam layer. We ended up choosing the Relief PerfectintelliBED® because it was soft while still maintaining spinal support.
It’s not an overly soft bed but it’s not like sleeping on a firm mattress either. I was trying to describe it to my mother the other day and found it really hard to do so, which is unfortunate because I am supposed to be trying to make a living as a writer and all. It almost feels as though you’re sort of floating on the bed. Not like a water bed, it doesn’t move around or anything. And it’s not some sort of anti-gravity bed, although that would be very cool. It’s just that the way it redistributes the gel to support your shoulders and hips and keep everything in alignment feels cushioned but without sinking in.
(Lucy Dog thought that my attempt to photograph the mattress was an invitation to get in on some good sleep.)
I was initially fairly hesitant about ordering online without ever having tried out the mattress but they offer a 60 day trial with free return shipping and I liked the idea of sleeping on a bed for longer than ten minutes in a store to try it out. Plus, I feel very awkward lying on mattresses in stores so I just sort of lay there on my back all stiff instead of how I actually sleep, which is curled up on my side with my arms tucked under my chin and one leg wrapped around my husband’s.
(It’s not KICKING it’s ENDEARMENT.)
There is a ton of science behind the intelliBED® because it’s a medical grade bed – This video does a great job of showing the non-toxic intelliGEL® works and I’m including the video below that explains why and how it promotes better sleep.
The intelliBED® is certainly a splurge, above what our initial budget was for a mattress but we liked that they had a 30 year warranty and felt like it was a good investment in our health. Good sleep is more and more essential to us these days, what with crazy work schedules, back issues and a preschooler who is night time potty training. We’ve had our bed for a little over a month now so we’re halfway through our 60 day trial and we love it. Seriously, it is the best sleep I have had in a long time and waking up feeling rested is worth it’s weight in gold.
They also have other budget friendly options, like their mattress toppers AND they’ve offered to give my readers 10% off when you use my referral link here and enter the code KAYLAAIMEE so I hope you find that savings helpful when you’re shopping!
So now our master bedroom makeover is about 90% complete and with the cold, rainy days we’ve had lately I have been loving spending the afternoons curled up on our comfy new bed watching old school Disney sing-along-movies with my favorite kiddo.
(Also? King size beds are amazing for folding laundry while binge watching Call The Midwife.)
