Remember when I asked if you would take the Kidde fire safety quiz this past summer so that we could try to win smoke alarms for our community? Well we WON, y’all!
So yesterday we packed up some Christmas cookies and had the privilege of delivering them along with several boxes full of smoke alarms to a local fire department.
The firefighters were incredibly gracious and gave Scarlette a special tour of the station AND let her ride in the fire truck which pretty much made her entire day.
She hasn’t stopped talking about it since. Actually, she didn’t stop talking while we were there either. As we toured the station she just kept up a running commentary like “Oh you hab a bed? I hab a bed too! I got a big girl bed. Oh you hab a tv? I hab two tvs in my house. Yeah.”
Then they turned the lights on the truck and she told us that what she REALLY wanted for Christmas was a fire truck.
(I’m pretty sure that after seeing it in action my husband ALSO wants a fire truck for Christmas.)
Then they let her sit in the driver’s seat and one of the guys said to me “Don’t worry, she can’t go anywhere without the keys.”
And then Scarlette leaned over, lifted the keys off, and said “Oh you mean dese keys? I weady to dwive now! I got dese keys!”
She was also fascinated with all of the knobs and gauges.
It was such a cool experience and you could tell that the guys were really passionate about their work. We were so impressed with them and the work that they do. They were so kind to take time out of their day to show us around and our community is lucky to have them serving as first responders.
But the thing that touched me the most was when they told us what they planned to do with the smoke alarms. They said that recently they responded to a fire in a community that resulted in a fatality because they didn’t have any smoke alarms in the home. After canvassing the community they learned that most of the homes in it did not have any smoke alarms at all.
So they will be doing what they call a “Safety Blitz” where they will go and spend the day installing the smoke alarms we donated in all of the homes in that community and talking about fire safety with the kids. To have a small part in something that will have such a positive impact was the best part of my week.
I can’t tell you how happy it makes me to be able to participate in such great initiatives that allow me to give back through this blog and I’m so thankful to y’all for partnering with me and Kidde to make this happen.
(This post is not sponsored, I just wanted to follow up and share how y’all helped us give back this season! And maybe take some treats to your local fire station for Christmas because those guys are busy! They had two calls just in the hour that we were there!)
