This year I am one of the crafts coordinators for our local Mothers Of Preschoolers (MOPS) group. It has been over a year since I last posted any paper-crafting projects to this blog because I had burnt out a bit on the hobby and spent my crafty time making my own bath and body products instead.
Then I was asked to do crafts for MOPS this year and thought that would be a fun way to be creative and crafty so expect to see some of our projects here (because I really appreciated people posting what their groups did when I was somewhat frantically searching for MOPS CRAFTS IDEAS on Pinterest!)
Our group has everyone leave their name tags in their table bin so that they can wear them at each meeting and so we decided necklaces would be an easy thing to slip on and off each time. We also wanted to do something fairly substantial so that they would hold up well for an entire year. Because you know I’m all about that bass, ’bout that bass (no treble.)
I also didn’t want to spend a lot of time and money on name tags that would just get thrown out so this way when we are finished with them, we can just shorten the length and ta-da, instant luggage tags!
The theme this year is Be You, Bravely and feathers are a prominent icon so we decided to do a version of these glitter dipped gift tags that I found on Pinterest. (I used the Silhouette file that she provided to cut out lots of paper feathers to make the glitter dipped feather banner seen in the back of the photo.)
Here is what we used:
(I am linking to some of the craft supplies on Amazon (affiliated) but I purchased several things at my local craft store)
- Wooden feathers from Laserbird on Etsy
- About 16 inches of cording (you can also add thin, sheer ribbon)
- White Spray Paint (I used Krylon for wood)
- Martha Stewart Glitter Glue (don’t even try anything else, nothing keeps glitter from falling off this stuff!)
- Chase Glitter Sealant Spray
- Paint Pen (I recommend it, my sharpie was a bit bumpy)
- Painter’s Tape ( I love Frog Tape, it peeled right off without taking any of the paint)
- Assorted Beads (We just bought a large bag of assorted turquoise beads)
- Pleated Ribbon
First I spray painted all of the feathers while Lucy Dog photobombed me. It took about three coats, these little things are porous! Then I laid a strip of painters tape diagonally across the feathers. I varied each one so that people with longer names would have more room. I am very thoughtful like that.
Then I painted the glitter glue (it comes with a brush) across the taped off bottom half of the wooden feather and just dipped it in my jar of glitter. I shook off the excess (there wasn’t much because I am telling y’all, nothing comes off with that MS glue) and then quickly peeled off the painters tape and let it dry. I used the same piece of painters tape for about five feathers before I had to get a new one.
Then I sprayed them with glitter sealer. I cut about a 3 inch piece of pleated ribbon and hot glued it along the back of the wooden feather. That was all my pre-event prep work. At our first meeting the girls will write their names on with a paint pen and then string their necklace with lots of pretty beads and charms. We also have optional crystal gems that people can glue one to denote how many children they have (hence the little bitty one by my name for my only.)
And that’s it! They really didn’t take too much work and were fun to make! Are you in a MOPS group? I am so glad that I decided to join one, y’all. It has been such a great experience for me AND it turned out to be an awesome way to make mom friends without having to go on awkward playdates, like this.
