Everyone needs a hobby and one of mine is making stuff. I like to get crafty, y’all. I recently entered into a partnership where I’ll get to try out different craft supplies and then share fun things with y’all, like projects and gift cards. If you can get someone else to bankroll your hobby, do it, that’s what my husband likes to say. (And all of my scrapbooking friends nod their heads. Scrapbooking is EXPENSIVE!) For this one the folks over at Plaid sent me their newly launched Folk Art Multi Surface Paint and Handmade Charlotte stencils.
I had planned to do a big laundry room project because our laundry room could desperately use a good makeover. And also a good cleaning and nothing motivates me to clean stuff better than the promise of getting to paint something afterwards. But a couple of big life things got in the way, like a preschooler who’s preemie lungs apparently can not handle preschool.
Scarlette’s room has a closet with two doors that open outward into the room and so I have been in the process of making a toddler organization center on the inside of the doors. It houses her felt boards for doing felt story play (the tutorial for those is here) and her morning and nighttime routine charts (you can download customizable printables of those here). I’m also working on a calendar so that she knows which days her activities are on and a place to hang her dress-up outfits. I’ll share the whole thing when we are finished but here is a peek at the progress so far.
While we were out of town my mother used the star stencils to paint some orange stars on the back of her door around her felt board. We thought it would be a fun surprise for Scarlette to come home to (thanks Mom!) I’ll add more stars to the door after we get the calendar and reward chart up above it.
We also used the paint and stencils to add some lettering to the canvas bins in her closet.
First we cut the stencils to size and lined them up on our project. Then we used removable tape to hold them in place (washi tape is great for this!) Next we just dabbed a small amount of paint onto a flat foam brush and stippled inside the stencil, then gently peel the stencil off.
The paint does work really well on a variety of surfaces but I think the stencils would be better if they were harder, the thick paper stencils got a little hard to work with as they got wet.
The paint is dishwasher safe if you wanted to try it out on glass (we might try to make a version of those sharpie mugs floating around pinterest!) and also machine washable (although I got those canvas bins at the Dollar Store so I don’t know if they would hold up in the wash or not.)
