Sometimes Scarlette says something and I think to myself “Self, wherever did she hear such a thing?” and then later I’ll catch myself using the same phrasing and be like “Oh right, it’s totally from me.”
Like the other day she said “Mommy I fink I am going to paint just a little bit on this wall right here. Do you fink dat will be just fine?”
I wondered where she had heard that phrase and then laughed because she sounded so grown-up and also because of the way she phrased that request, like maybe if she just acted super casual about it I would be all “Sure, painting on the wall is a fantastic idea.”
(And then later I was on a phone call and heard myself say “Yes, I think that will be just fine.”)
Or how she asked me if she could play outside and when I told her that we couldn’t go outside right then because it was really cold and rainy, she said “But Mommy, I fink dis would be a good opportunity for me.”
She has also developed a bit of my drawl, especially when she says the word “Well.” She gives it a lot of extra syllables and emphasis and draws it out so that it sounds like “WAY uhl llll.”
But this new little bit of Mommy mimicking has shown me a few phrases that maybe I need to pull the reigns in on a bit.
Like how I tend to say “Flippin'” a lot. I blame this on being southern and also growing up Southern Baptist, where you learn a lot of pseudo curse words such as “Son of a biscuit” and “Oh crumb.”
The other day I was on the phone with my best friend, Tiff, when I caught Scarlette doing something that she wasn’t supposed to do and when I got on to her for it she said “BUT CURIOUS GEORGE DOES IT.” And since Tiff is very familiar with my disdain for Curious George, I said into the phone “Flippin’ CURIOUS GEORGE!”
Later that week we went to Barnes and Nobles and when we walked past a little Curious George display, Scarlette shook her head in, blew out a breath and said “FLIPPIN’ CURIOUS GEORGE!”
Or how someone was rude to me in the store and I got super annoyed by it and kind of huffed in frustration and then Scarlette said “YEAH, SHE NOT A VERY NICE LADY, BLESS HER HEART.”
But my favorite is how lately we’ve been talking a lot about God and giving and that the reason we give is because we love God and because God tells us to. Which is obviously totally apparent in my super graceful reaction to the rude lady at the store and all. So her new thing is to try to convince me that GOD told her to do things, because apparently she has grasped that this is of some sort of significance to Mommy and so she’s just going to try and work that angle. I recorded this right after she told me that God told her we should go outside instead of eat lunch:
