Scarlette, like most little kids, is a fan of trains and so last month when my best girlfriends and I decided to visit Chattanooga, Tennessee we booked a 3 night stay on Groupon Getaways at the historic Chattanooga Choo Choo hotel.
I booked one of the converted train car rooms because I thought that would be a fun memory for Scarlette. It’s really unfortunate that my child was not at all enthusiastic about this: For weeks before we left Scarlette kept asking me “Is TODAY the day we’re going to sleep in a Choo Choo House?!” This was what our room looked like and the view from our window. While the Chattanooga Choo Choo Hotel is incredibly impressive from the outside, with a gorgeous lobby and the unique addition of the train cars, I thought the rooms were definitely in need of some improvements. I know the hotel is undergoing a multi-million dollar renovation right now and hope they use that money to freshen the rooms. I was glad that we had used a Groupon because while the train car room was a fun novelty, it was certainly not up to the standards of what I would expect for the cost. If you have a child that just adores trains, I would say it’s worth doing for one night just for the novelty of it because Scarlette’s excitement about sleeping in a Choo Choo Train was just so exuberant that it almost made up for what I found lacking (because there is just no excusing that amount of dust, y’all. And I’m a terrible housekeeper. But it really aggravated Scarlette’s asthma.) There were several things I did like about the hotel. They have a trolley that runs around the property and breakfast, while not included, was really good. I also loved that the hotel was on the city shuttle line, which meant we could just hop on the shuttle and ride to all of the places that we wanted to eat or sight-see.
That was really nice because I brought my two best girlfriends with me so we had Tiff’s new baby (I realize that he does not look new, on account of how he is a cute little butterball, but he was 3 months old here) and Scarlette which meant juggling strollers and diaper bags around town. Being able to hop on and off the shuttle anywhere we wanted to go was such a perk. We ate dinner the first night at the pizzeria train car because the front desk gave us discount vouchers.
Visiting Chattanooga: What To See, Do & Eat in Chattanooga, Tennessee
The second day we ate lunch at a place near the shuttle stops called L2 Fuel, which was a little tucked away Brazilian fusion place attached to a skate shop. The food was fantastic. We found them on Groupon , because we were trying to keep the cost of our meals down, and it was one of the best meals we had. Our total for 4 people with appetizers and mixed drinks was just $47, which came down to $7 after the Groupon. Directly across the hotel is a little chocolate and coffee shop called The Hot Chocolatier and it was our favorite sweets place. I absolutely recommend dropping in as the staff was super friendly and the food and drinks were amazing. Seriously, ask for the handcrafted marshmallow topping instead of whipped cream on your drink. It was heavenly.
The atmosphere was nice and opened up onto a patio filled with twinkle lights so we spent a lot of time there chatting over coffee and desserts. I let Scarlette pick out a sweet treat and she busied herself with making it last as long as possible. I love kids. We were there for four days but we got in later on the first day and opted just to let Scarlette play on the trains at the hotel while we settled in and saved our sight-seeing for the last few days so I’ll share where we visited tomorrow!
