I have polycystic ovarian syndrome, also known as PCOS. Or to those of us suffering with it “THE BANE OF OUR EXISTENCE.” Because not only does it hinder your ability to have a baby, it also wreaks havoc on your skin. It’s a fun ailment, that one. Or not.
This is why I’m totally skin care obsessed, because no one told my pores that I am closing in on thirty for goodness sakes and could they please get their act together and stop breaking me out like a fourteen year old girl? I’m known to try every new skincare product that comes along promising drastic results. My husband is not fond of walking down the skin care aisle with me when we go to the store because I’m all “THIS ONE! I HAVEN’T TRIED THIS ONE!” and apparently my exuberance over exfoliating masks embarrasses him or something.

The staple of my routine is Cetaphil® Gentle Skin Cleanser, ever since my roommate introduced me to it back in college. I admit to being disloyal and straying from it every now and then when a flashy bottle or an ad showing that cute girl from the Remember The Titans movie and her nice, clear skin catches my eye. But over the ten year course of our relationship, I always return to the dependable cream and blue bottle. Of all the skincare products that I own, this is the one I can’t live without, the one I keep a travel bottle filled with at all times.
The thing is, it doesn’t dry out my skin. And my skin is pretty dry any time of year. I know right? My skin is dry AND acne-prone. THANKS FOR NOTHING, OVARIES. But without fail winter comes and my skin is all “WHAT IS GOING ON?!” And I’m like “Baby, it’s cold outside.”
Oh wait, that’s not me. That’s Nick Lachey. (STAY OUT OF IT, NICK LACHEY! <- If you got that joke, then you and I would be the best of friends.)
Probably scientific studies could be done about how dry my skin gets in the wintertime while still managing to NOT BE CLEAR. I’m not at all bitter about this, obviously. And also? I’m really fair skinned. Do you know what runs in my family? Skin cancer. I am not even kidding. I was dealt an AMAZING genetic hand, right?
So any moisturizer I use has to have SPF in it, even when the sun is nowhere near the northern hemisphere (what, I paid attention in science, y’all) so that I am forced to rely on things like blush for a little bit of color. Because seriously, skin cancer is no joke.
In all of my years using Cetaphil products as my cleanser, I had never tried a Cetaphil brand moisturizer. Don’t ask me why. I don’t have a good answer. I could make up something witty but the truth is that I often overlook things that are totally obvious. Like how yesterday I was stacking blocks with Scarlette and Jeff said “Wow, if you get five stacked I will be really impressed!” and I answered “Well, I just did but Lettie knocked them down.” And he cocked his head to the side, patted my shoulder and said “I thought it was pretty obvious that I was talking to the BABY there, honey.” In other news, I am AMAZING at stacking baby blocks.
So Cetaphil brand sent me their Cetaphil® Daily Facial Moisturizer with SPF 15 to try out. I’m really working on being less long-winded, I swear. It’s pretty light for a moisturizer that has SPF in it; many other brands that I have tried feel heavy or oily. But it does help give the extra moisture I need for the colder winter weather. I can’t claim a long-term love affair with it like the one I have with my Cetaphil® Gentle Skin Cleanser, but I will tell you that I definitely have a crush. The ball’s in your court now, moisturizer. Play well, my friend.
