When I was a kid I used to read a ton of Encyclopedia Brown novels. Did y’all read those? I also read a lot of Nancy Drew mysteries, which might account for my current Veronica Mars obsession. Why did no one tell me about this show back when it was a thing? In any case (SEE WHAT I DID THERE) I think that all of those summers I spent reading children’s mystery books for my school’s BOOKIT program (you could earn a personal pan pizza, y’all!) are the reason I love mystery shows as an adult.
Specifically, I like trying to solve the mystery before they solve it on my television. I’m also pretty good at it, much to the chagrin of my husband when I yell out things like “IT’S THE GARDENER’S DAUGHTER’S BOYFRIEND IN THE KITCHEN WITH THE WRENCH!” in the middle of whatever program we are watching. Surprisingly, he is still watching Sherlock with me.
But mostly we are watching Sherlock because it is hilarious. We stumbled on the show one night after Downton Abbey, which my husband refuses to watch with me despite my insistence that it is basically the same thing as Shawshank Redemption. (I know it’s nothing like Shawshank Redemption. That just normally works on him.) We both ended up hooked on the episode so I looked it up on Netflix to see if we could catch up on the series and was so excited to find it on there!
As for what the little one is watching on Netflix around here, it’s Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood all the way. I really love that show for the concept lessons that it teaches and they seem to really stick with Scarlette thanks to the catchy little jingles. Seriously, we have a jingle for everything. The only slight problem I have is that I keep mixing up the Daniel Tiger jingle for “trying again” with the pop song from the 90’s.
So I’m all “If at first you don’t succeed, dust yourself off and try again! You can dust it off and try again!” and then my three year old looks at me with raised eyebrows and says “Dat not da song Mommy. Da song is “Just keep twying, you get beh-eh-ter!” Then she wants to know what I am doing with my shoulders and I’m like “I’m brushing my shoulders off!” and my husband is all “Yeah, that’s a totally different song.”
This is what parenting looks like in my house.
Oh, and for the record sometimes episodes of Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood that center around losing a tooth might completely freak out your three year old. I did not see this coming:
What are y’all watching on Netflix right now? Any recommendations?
Disclosure: I’m a member of the Netflix #StreamTeam which means that they comp the service we were previously paying for in exchange for my highly intellectual posts about what I am watching, like vintage episodes of The Baby-Sitter’s Club 😉
