Here is a fun story. In May of last year, I sold the very last of all our baby gear in a garage sale on account of how we were sure that we were done having kids. Exactly three months later, owning zero things for a baby, I found out that I was pregnant with Ridley.
The thing about having another baby is that the second time around you know exactly what you do and don’t need. This time around I had very specific things I wanted in a diaper bag. I wanted something that could double as my purse, would match everything, would wipe clean, and that I could convert to a backpack so that I could be hands-free with two kids. Basically, I wanted a unicorn diaper bag.
So for Christmas, my dad got me this Lily-Jade diaper bag. It is pricey, but absolutely worth it. I love that the inside lifts out so that I can use it as a purse, it has a ton of pockets, the leather is easy to clean and the strap converts to a crossbody or backpack carry.
I love “What’s In My Diaper Bag” posts, so here is what I keep in mine:
My friend Darcy made me this little diaper + wipes clutch. One side holds about 5 diapers and the other side is a wipes dispenser. ALDI just introduced a new baby line called Little Journey, so that is the brand I am currently using for wipes and diapers. Initially I was a bit hesitant about the thinness of the diapers but y’all, I have been using them for an entire month now and have not had a single leak! So I’m a convert because this baby is prone to blowouts and these are the only brand we’ve tried so far that have managed to do a great job at containment.
I also keep a muslin Aden + Anais blanket on me at all times, because not only does Ridley love to rub them between his fingers, but they are also perfect for using as a nursing cover. I don’t even bother with fancy covers anymore; I just tuck the ends of the blanket into my straps on my shoulders and voila, lightweight and breathable cover.
For Baby: I keep an extra outfit and an extra onesie. An Aden + Anais bib because those are literally the best. Nothing leaks through those. Extra mittens because my little guy likes to pinch me while nursing, a toy, a bulb syringe, a teething bracelet, and extra socks. He’s exclusively nursing but I usually keep a fruit pouch in my bag for his sister who still loves those things. I picked up some of the new Little Journey puree pouches at ALDI and I’ll keep those stocked for when the baby starts solids next month.
For Mommy: I keep a bag full of essentials like lipstick, cinnamint essential oil lip balm because that stuff is better than a Kylie Jenner Lip Kit for plumpness, pens, an assortment of hair ties and clips for myself and for Scarlette, a handkerchief, an extra charge cord, washi tape because you never know when you’ll need to tape something, business cards and my sunglasses. I also keep my Kindle with me for afternoons spent waiting in the kindergarten car line and long doctor’s appointments. And I am never without a bottle of peppermint essential oil because it is my go-to for instant headache and nausea relief. When I was queasy after labor, I was like “SOMEONE GET MY PEPPERMINT OIL STAT” and was so thankful that I had a bottle in my bag.
Here’s how it all fits in my bag. The inner portion of the bag snaps out so you can easily wash it and I love that it has a ton of pockets. I keep the changing pad in the back pocket and my phone and sunglasses in the front pockets.
The first time I shopped at ALDI was because so many of my friends had recommended it to me. Here’s what you will need in order to shop at ALDI: your own shopping bags, a quarter to unlock your shopping cart (you get your quarter back at the end, unlike that time I lived in Canada and had to sacrifice my Loonies for a cart) and a celebratory dance for when you see how much money you saved at the end of your trip.
I am really thrilled that now I can grab baby products while buying my groceries. I’m still figuring out life with two kids and at this stage that we’re in, I love being able to get everything in one location.
Honestly the only things you really always need to keep on you are diapers, wipes and a lightweight blanket. That way if your baby does have a blowout you can always cover them up with the blanket if you, say, use your spare outfit and forget to pack another one. Not that that has ever happened to me. I’m totally not speaking from experience or anything. I’m just saying your chances of avoiding this scenario are much better with the Little Journey diapers, according to my recent observations.
And I definitely recommend a backpack diaper bag because being able to be hands-free and having it not take up space in shopping carts and strollers is a lifesaver. You can see the Little Journey line at ALDI here!
